Dogs, wag your tails today to help cats PURR TO STOP PUPPY MILLS!

Below is a post that I have on my cats' blog. Each Sunday my cats purr for a worthy cause. PURRS 4 PEACE is a world-wide effort. This week felines are purring to stop puppy mills. The kitties of the fambly would like to invite all dogs to wag their tails at three this afternoon to show solidarity. Humans can assist their canines by talking baby talk, tossing a Frisbee or tennis ball, taking a car ride in the country - you name it, because a dog will wag its tail at the mere sight of someone they love. Now on to the task at hand - getting rid of puppy mills in our lifetime!

This week Confucius Cat is asking all of us kitties to collectively purr to end puppy mills. We are also adding that we should purr to end cattery's who have no business being in business if they don't take their responsibility to take care of their animals honestly and consistently.

We really had to hold our momma back this week because we didn't want our bloggy to become R rated for momma going on a RAMPAGE against puppy mills. You see, our momma has done rescue for about 25 years so she's seen more than most, and much more than she'll ever want to see again. There is nothing lovely or loving or humane or beneficial in a puppy mill. Dogs live their entire lives in little cages and are treated worse than cattle because generally there are no inspections of the animal management from the state or the department of agriculture - until it's too late for a lot of the dogs that have been living in horror since the time they were born.
The only home they will know from birth to death

Rotten teeth, mammary cancers, ulcered bottoms and toes and feet, blindness, if you can think of it you will find it in a puppy mill. Humans who treat companion animals like this are not people who love a breed and wish to improve it. These are people who find out that a breed is making money and they hop on the money wagon with all the rest of the leeches.
Not all Portuguese Water Dogs can end up in the White House
Breeders of Portuguese Water Dogs are cringing now that our president has a Portie. That's all it takes and then the rush is on for the uneducated to want to buy a pup like the President without even giving second thought to the needs of the particular dog. Then, when the novelty wears off the poor pet is tossed away like junk either to enter a shelter (the lucky ones) or to be dumped by the side of the road. Those dogs sit there you know - waiting for the horrible people to come back for it - that's a dog for you - loyal to the end.
I'm sure the owners of this mill thought they were doing a good job
At the end of the day and at the end of a raid at a puppy mill - this was the result of a clean up. Did the owners of the mill know that they had so many sick, dying and miserable animals? Who knows? Did they care? That I DO know - they didn't care one, little bit - unless it was pregnant and could have made them some money.
Cattery's are not much better. A friend of mine paid to have a rescue flown to Michigan from a cattery in Connecticut. Turns out the nine year old Tonkinese had only been out of his cage to breed or to go to a show to get points so his kittens would be worth more money. When Brownie came to Karen's home that nine year old cat acted like a baby kitten running and playing and napping in the sun and following Karen around like a pup. Can you imagine being a cat and never having the opportunity to jump and run until you were nine years old? Where was that cage? In the basement of the breeder along with 30-35 other cages of her breeding stock.
A life of breeding with no personal love or care or respect

OUR SHELTERS ARE FULL OF LOVING PERFECT AND SWEET PETS that want to come home with you. They will love you and be loyal and you will be saving a life. Each and every time anyone buys from a backyard breeder or a puppy-mill or a cattery you are perpetuating the miserable lives of all those who are left behind. We MUST stop making these places profitable and we must also SPEAK UP when we notice that laws are broken with respect to animal cruelty. It's just the right thing to do. People who abuse animals, and there are many ways to abuse animals, will abuse children, the elderly and the impaired. It's not up to someone else. IT IS UP TO YOU.
Week 13 of Purrs 4 Peace details are as follows:
  • Week thirteen’s appointed time is Sunday, September 6, 2009.
  • Participants should purr for three minutes commencing at 3 p.m. EDT (U.S.) which is 8:00 p.m. (20:00 hrs.) BST in the U.K.
  • The cat’s human staff should assist their cats with the project by stroking and nuzzling the cat at the appointed time.
  • Please post your cat name and the country you purr in at www.confuciuscat.blogspot.com as a COMMENT if you are participating in this historic project. (posting a link to your own website-if you have one-is encouraged.) Or let me know by message on twitter or facebook.
  • Posting purrs on facebook ( Acolytes of Confucius Cat or as friend to Alley Mason) and twitter (@ConfuciusCat) is encouraged, since it inspires purring in others, but not required. On twitter please use #purrs4peace in your tweets.

Scary posts lately, Scout and Freyja... Just over at Bruce's, and he's doing the same thing. I think I'll post about it on twitter - such a good, oh so good "cause" - it just shouldn't be happening at all. i felt ill looking at that photo of all the kitties - oh felt so sick. Must do something. Thanks for posting...

Thanks for letting us know, we will all be doing purrs and wags here. I think you seed on a post of mine that Mum will not shop in any store that sells animals because rabbits, and other small furries often have the same fate as puppy mills. It makes us oh so sad and angry.

Dreadfully upsetting pictures in your post today - you are right to remind us of the horrors of puppy mills. They are referred to as puppy farms in the UK but it is same cruelty and neglect of animals driven by human greed.
We are both rescue dogs - for very different reasons.
We wish every dog could have a good life in a loving home.

Ugh. I hate puppy mill stories.. and I hate how people can turn such a blind eye to it. It's all over the news, it's all over the net.. yet people still have the nerve to go out and buy from pet stores.

We will certainly wag at 3:00 pm today. I was horrified by the poor doggie in the picture that looked like he had dreg locks. Currently, I am sleeping/reading blogs on mommy's lap.

what disturbing images. puppy and kitty mills should be banned, but we all know it's going to be a LONG road until that happens...

Thank you for spreading the word about the horrors those poor dogs and cats are forced to live through. My island doesn't have a puppy mill, but there are plenty of irresponsible backyard breeders here who are only adding to the pet overpopulation problem. Many target the US military people on the island and don't care that the people they sell to know nothing about the breed and often dump them on the road or the pound once they leave. Every summer there are always so many Huskies, GSDs, Rotties, and Labs looking for homes, because the breeders they came from only care for quick cash and not about the welfare of the breed.

There are two pounds on my island. The no kill has been too full for the past year to take any more dogs and the other pound only holds dogs for 3-5 days before putting them down. It makes my hoomans very angry when people pay outrageous prices for pups from backyard breeders (that aren't sold on limited registration and whose parents have not been health screened) when they are reputable breeders on the island who care about their dogs and there are plenty of good dogs looking for homes at the pound. I was one of those dogs and I'm so grateful that I didn't end up at the other pound and that my hoomans found me when they did.

Thank you for posting this. This message needs to be seen far and wide.
I wish people will quit turning the other way, and pay attention to what is really happening, and that puppy mills do exist.

PS. Sorry I have been absent, but it has been for a good cause. I recently discovered some very disturbing news about a man that I know through a bulletin board, he is harming dogs, many of them. Through lots of investigating on my part, I have been able to get and document the facts, and bringing a couple people into the situation with me, we are still working on gathering more information, before it is turned over to the authorities.

I will be more active again, once this is over, but right now, it is consuming all of my time.

Hugs.

Thanks for a good rant on puppy mills...there can never be too much said about them until we shut them down. It's amazing to believe in this country and in this day and age, such a thing still exists. I would like to add that there are many backyard breeders that are equally guilty of the same atrocities only on a smaller scale so you don;t hear about them.

Puppy mills are so horrible. There was a recent case in Kaufman county, TX and the woman who ran it said she just loved dogs. She's not right in the head if you ask me. If she loved those doggies, how could she treat them like that? Didn't she know that 550 dogs was too many?
