Time To Eat The Dog: The Real Guide To Sustainable Living

I find the fact that someone took the time to do the math and then publish the results AND think that anyone would care - I find to be astonishing! This reminds me of the government study about how cow farts contribute to global warming.

A MEDIUM-sized dog has the same carbon impact as a Toyota Land Cruiser driven 6,000 miles a year, a new book claims.

Time To Eat The Dog: The Real Guide To Sustainable Living also suggests a cat is equivalent to running a Volkswagen Golf.

The findings are based on the amount of land needed to grow food for pets. Even a pair of hamsters do the same damage as running a plasma television, say the book’s authors Robert and Brenda Vale.

But rabbits and chickens were eco-friendly because they provide meat for their owners, while a canary or a goldfish does little harm to the planet, the authors said.

I doubt they took the intangibles into account when they were doing the math!

When we hit the point that animals are not environmental friendly, the crazies are in charge.

We did laugh at the study. It partially said that cats are bad for the environment because they are predators. Does that make all predators bad? Isn't that the vast majority of animals?

Hi guys,
Good thing we don't live in certain Asian countries where this is reality & not a joke!

What a crazy study. The thought that a dog has "the same carbon impact as a Toyota Land Cruiser driven 6,000 miles a year..." seems nuts. I wonder how they determined that number?

We do buy grass-fed beef for our dogs from our next door neighbor who raises a few cattle each year. I wonder if that makes us any less bad than average?

Good grief....talk about a waste of time and money...no wonder everything is such a mess if they are going to do such stupid studies like that one. Eat the dog....no way...stupid!

Me equivalent to a land cruiser? I can say I sometimes hit the trails as hard as a land cruiser.. but leave no exhaust behind and my gas is tuna.

Tell your mom that the no pull harness is OK, but we don't always use it. I have to use a pinch collar a lot of the time because momma says it is a better communication device. But that is tricky because she doesn't want to pinch me if I am pulling away from something scary.

The no pull won't work unless there is already some basic obedience. I wore it when I went to a big doggie fair and pulled so much that I got boo boo's in my dog pits. Ouch!

But it is better than just using a collar and thanks to my good dog attention school I can use just the harness about half the time.

That must be a Halloween "trick" because even humans can't be that stupid! But speaking of food, we're hungry! :)

Thanks for visiting our blog! You guys are awesome!

Good grief someone really needs a life LOL. I know of plenty of humans that could just disappear and I'd stick to cats and dogs lol.

I think we should be focusing on the huge amounts of energy we waste by not buying locally grown foods, rather than loving our furry friends and your post about dog and cat skins... I never would have thought of it... thank you for raising awareness about this. It makes me and Sky Sky sick!

Interesting article - I read it a few days ago and chuckled. Take my SUV if you want, but the dogs stay! :)

So what if we leave a big carbon impact! A world without dogs is a sad, and boring place. Who would want to live on a place like that?
